Carol Bond and the Big Rule
Carol was very upset when she found out that her husband had a baby with her close friend, Myrlinda.
Carol wanted revenge, so she put harmful chemicals on things Myrlinda might touch, like her mailbox and car door.
Carol was caught and sent to court. The government charged her with breaking a federal law about chemical weapons.
Carol thought the government was using a law meant for much more serious situations to punish her.
So Carol took her case all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States!
The Supreme Court agreed that Carol had the right to challenge the federal law.
The Court said the law should not be read as covering an ordinary crime like Carol’s when state and local laws could handle it.
The Court sent the case back to a lower court.
