UAE FLAG AND CULTURE
Design: Three horizontal stripes — green on top, white in middle, black on bottom — with a vertical red stripe at the hoist (near the flagpole). Ratio is 1:2.
Who designed it: Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, who was just 19 years old in 1971. His design won a nationwide competition announced in Al Ittihad newspaper in the months before federation. It was first raised on 2 December 1971 by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan when the federation was declared.
What inspired it: The verse of 14th-century Arab poet Safi al-Din al-Hilli: “White are our acts, black our battles, green our fields, and red our swords”. The four colors are the Pan-Arab colors, tracing back to the Arab Revolt of 1916 and representing Arab unity.
