The Day The Tall Ships Came

One morning, I looked out across the water. I saw huge boats with tall white sails. “Look!” I called. “What are those?” Our people had never seen ships like these before.

The boats brought Europeans to our shores. They looked different from us and spoke a language we did not understand. We watched them carefully. Some of us felt curious. Others felt unsure.

At first, some of the newcomers and our people traded goods and shared knowledge. We showed them things we knew about the land, the rivers, and the seasons. We hoped we could live peacefully together.

As more Europeans arrived, life began to change. Some newcomers took land that belonged to our people. New diseases made many First Nations people very sick. Families lost loved ones, and some communities became smaller. Our people felt sadness, fear, and anger.

Even when things were hard, our people did not give up. Our Elders taught us our languages, stories, songs, and traditions. Families worked together to care for one another. We remembered who we were and where we came from.

Today, First Nations people continue to share their stories and traditions with the next generations. Our cultures are alive. Our languages, teachings, and connections to the land are important. I am proud of my people and our history.
