Sailor's Spotlight
Title: Sailor’s Spotlight Main Character: Sailor, a 15 year-old in the 10th grade. Recently moved to a new school in Boston, Massachusetts and is eager to make a new friend. Setting: The auditorium stage at Eastridge High School during the 5th annual talent show Beginning- New Beginnings (Page 1) Middle - Taking a Risk (Page 2) Middle - A Test of Courage(Page 3) Ending - The Victory (Page 4)
New Beginnings: This is Sailor Styles, a young quiet 15 year old who is about 5’5 with long wavy dark brown hair from Newport, Rhode Island. Her father Captain Stanley Styles, who was a captain of a fisherman boat that supplied fresh seafood to local restaurants in Newport. They recently moved to Boston, Massachusetts because her father wanted to follow his dreams and open his own seafood restaurant. Captain Stanley would take Sailor on his boat to simply bond and create adventurous memories together. After moving to Boston, Sailor now attends Eastridge High School, the only high school in the Boston school district. It was a medium-size red building with many tall glass windows that sits by a small pond, in the middle of Emerson Street, holding about 400 students inside. Despite being at her new school for only 8 months and not having any friends since nobody has ever talked to her, she thought of an interesting way on how she can make at least one friend.
Taking a Risk: On Tuesday, Sailor saw a poster passing by the nurses office with a sign-up sheet tailing below it with a pen hanging on a string, taped to the sheet. “Eastridge High’s 5th Annual Talent Show, this Friday November 25th, 2026, from 1:00pm to 2:30pm. ALL ACTS WELCOMED!!! Winner will be announced at 2:45pm in the auditorium! Students will dismiss from their homeroom class at 3:00pm” it read. Sailor knew exactly what to do in that moment, sing her favorite song that her dad used to sing to her as a child during their father and daughter time on his boat, sailing at sea. Sailor was so determined , she grabs the pen and writes her name down in cursive on the 4th line onto the sign up sheet. There were other signatures on the paper, "why not be the first" she thought. Sailor knew this was her only chance.
A Test of Courage: It was the day of the talent show, Sailor was filled with nervous throughout the school day. She spent the last few days wondering if she really wanted to perform in front of the entire school. Although her voice was truly amazing, all Sailor could think about was forgetting the words to the song and embarrassing herself in front of school mates. Standing behind the long heavy draped velvet red curtains on the auditorium stage, with one hand, Sailor grasps the microphone tightly into her chest while peeking out the long red velvet curtains, standing behind one other student. She started to get butterflies and the jitters all in one. Then it was Sailor’s her turn, before she walked on the stage, she closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths. Inhaling and exhaling, reminiscing the old times with her dad while he sang to her on the water, calming her fast-pacing heartbeat. She began to walk on squeaky wood stage; she felt a burning hot sensation from the spotlights beaming onto her skin. Sailor began singing.
The Victory: As Sailor’s angelic voice gracefully filled the entire auditorium as she sang her favorite song with love and passion, at the end of her act as her last note echoed though out the room, she received a standing ovation from everyone. The audience was instantly captivated by the sweet sound of her voice and fell in love with Sailor’s performance the room was filled with lots of cheers, whistles and thunderous claps. At the end of the show, the judge started to announce the winner of the talent show. “… And in 1st place with a score of 9.5 Is …. Sailor Styles! Congratulations Sailor on your big win, take a bow!” the judge yelled into the microphone with so much excitement, handing her a large golden trophy. Then unexpectedly, 4 of Sailor’s classmates rushed to the front of the stag to congratulate Sailor on her win, and tell her how good of a singer she is. She finally was in the spotlight. One girl named Taylor wanted to become friends and even invited her to her birthday party the following Saturday. Sailor smiled brightly because just like she had always wanted, a friend.
