Hercules
Hercules was born to the god Zeus and the mortal woman Alcmene. Because Hercules was a child of Zeus's infidelity, Zeus's wife Hera despised him and plotted against him from birth. As an infant, Hera sent two venomous snakes to kill him in his crib, but Hercules strangled them with his bare hands.
When Hercules grew up, married Princess Megara of Thebes, and had children, Hera struck him with a fit of temporary madness. In his delirium, Hercules tragically killed his wife and children. Devastated by what he had done, he consulted the Oracle at Delphi, who instructed him to serve his cowardly cousin, King Eurystheus, for twelve years. Eurystheus assigned him the famous Twelve Labors
After completing his labors and embarking on further adventures, Hercules married Deianira. She was tricked by the dying centaur Nessus into giving Hercules a tunic smeared with poisoned blood. Overcome with burning agony, Hercules built his own funeral pyre on Mount Oeta. As his mortal half burned away, his divine essence rose to Mount Olympus, where he became an immortal god and reconciled with Hera.
