Me, Myself, and I
I ran as fast as I could. Noah was in front me, laughing and taunting me. We were playing tag.
Noah kept running for a little bit but, then he stopped. I kept running towards him and screamed tag as I tapped his shoulder.
Noah stood there and slowly started to back up. I asked him what was wrong and he pointed behind me. When I looked back I saw a group of men with torches and houses burning behind them.
I took off running with Noah close behind me. We heard yelling and screaming, but I didn't look back. We passed our burning village and saw other people running. Some wen tin different directions and some never made it out. Still we ran and ran and ran. It felt like we were running forever.
when we finally stopped running I realized just how far we ran. We lived close to the desert and people would often travel through there if needed. Yet, I never thought about going there but it was like. Now I knew just how terrible it was. It felt like my body was on fire and I was so bright! I looked over at Noah and he was already walking away from me. I asked him what he was doing and he said walking. I looked at him and then where we came from. I sighed and started to follow Noah deeper and deeper into the desert.
It felt like I'd been kicked in my stomach. My skin burns ad was starting to peel off a sun burn. Noah was doing any better either. In fact, he was even worse than me. His cheeks were so hollowI could see the bone and he could barely walk without tripping over himself. Still, we kept going.
A few weeks had passed at this point and it was starting to look grim. Noah couldn't even walk properly anymore, all he could do was drag his legs behind him. One day he fell and he couldn't get up and that's when I knew that I needed to do something.
I felt my throat close up when I saw Noah on the floor. I had to help him somehow! I looked around to see if there was anything that could help us, and I what looked like a group of people walking in the distance. I called to them for help as I dragged Noah behind me, his body cold as the evening air.
I laid Noah down on the floor so I could run to the group faster. The people pause like deer in front of a head light and starred at me. I could see a mix of fear and concern on their face as I approached them. I stopped in front of them, and pointed to Noah who lay on the floor behind me. They stood there for a moment before they moved to help us. Maybe it was because they were afraid or maybe they didn't think helping a stranger would be a good idea.
Thankfully Noah was okay and we ended up becoming part of their group. This time we had food and water. A few days after we joined I started to wonder where we were headed. When I asked where we were going, they didn't give me a clear answer. I decided that wherever we were going was better than the village.
Another week had passed and we had finally gotten out of the desert. I breathed a sigh of relief and smiled at Noah. He nodded at me and we kept going. It seemed like everything was getting better by the day ever since we joined the group.
The next day I saw something odd. It was far it the distance, but I could still it. It looked like a metal gate. As we started to get closer to the gate people in the group started muttering and walking faster. I looked back at Noah and expected him to be right behind me, but I didn't see him.
It saw Noah on the ground a few feet away from me, it looked like he was sleeping. I ran to him and tried to make him get up, but he wasn't moving.
I looked at the group and then Noah. If I could carry him to the camp then maybe I could save him! And so I took off running, hoping that I would get there in time. My lungs burned and I almost fell a few times, but I kept going.
When I finally reached the camp, I shouted for help. After a few minutes of shouted, a man came over and asked me what was wrong. When I told him about Noah he rushed to get him help and asked me to give him Noah.
I waited for a few days, but I the man that I saw never came back to me. So I started to look for the man. It took me a few hours but I finally found him. When the man looked at my face he had a tint of sadness in his eyes. When I asked where Noah was, I found out why he was sad. Noah was dead.
I nodded and silently walked to a nearby tree. I sat down and curled into a ball. I didn't do anything for hours, I couldn't believe it. It wasn't until the sun went down that I moved. It was just me now.
A few weeks had passed an d I started to get used to the camp. Even though it was crowded and loud sometimes, it was still better than the desert. I sat down and dragged my finger through the warm dirt. I kept thinking about Noah and how I should've kept a closer eye on him. I know it wasn't my fault that he's gone but, I still felt terrible. I sighed and looked up at the sky. At least now Noah was safe. We all were.
