Facing my fear
It was presentation day in psychology class. Abby had spent hours preparing, but when she walked into the classroom and saw everyone sitting and waiting, she suddenly became nervous. She was worried about forgetting her words or embarrassing herself in front of the class.
The 3 components of emotions: 1. Physiological Arousal: - Her heart started beating faster. - Her palms became sweaty. - Her stomach felt like it had butterflies. - Her hands started shaking. 2. Cognitive Interpretation: - "What if I mess up?" - She's worried that everyone would judge her. 3. Behavioral Expression: - She avoided making eye contact. - She spoke quietly and nervously.
The theory of emotions - James-Lange theory, our bodies react physically to a situation first, and then we experience an emotion based on those physical reactions.
Abby took a deep breath, looked at her notes, and reminded herself that she had practiced. She slowly started speaking to the class. As she continued, she became more comfortable and confident By the end of the presentation, Abby was smiling because she had accomplished something that originally scared her. Her classmates clapped.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: - How people are motivated by different needs in their lives. Maslow believed people must meet basic needs, such as food, water, and safety, before focusing on higher-level needs like confidence, achievement, and reaching their full potential. Physiological needs: Abby needs food, water, and enough rest to have the energy to focus on school. Safety needs: She needs to feel comfortable and safe in her classroom instead of feeling judged or threatened. Love and belonging: Having supportive classmates and a teacher helps Abby feel accepted. Esteem needs: Completing her presentation and receiving positive feedback helps build her confidence and self-esteem. Self-actualization: By facing her fear and challenging herself, Abby is working toward becoming the best version of herself.
