Mara is playing at the park before Mara leaves to go to a carnival this weekend. As Mara is playing, she sees a little boy come up and asks her "Can you play?" Mara looks over at the little boy and his family. She notices that they have a different skin color than her.
Mara look confused. Mara does not know why their skin color is different. Mara asks her dad "Why does he have a lighter skin color than his moms?" "You noticed their skin colors are different? That is okay! People in the same family can have different skin colors!" Dad says.
The boy's mom tell him that it is time to leave. "Mom can we come back tomorrow?" The little boy asks. After Mara sees that families can have different skin colors, she realizes that the boy could be really nice. Mara hopes she can see the boy at the park again. "Maybe we can play castles and dragons next time?" Mara says to the boy.
On the roadtrip, Mara and her family stop at the grocery store for some snacks. Mara overhears a little girl ask a question. "Dad, can we get some chips?" says the little girl "What one is your dad?" asks Mara "They are both my dads. I call one Dad, and the other one papa!" explains the little girl.
Mara is confused when the little girl says that she has two dads. "Why does she have two dads?" Mara asks her mom. "Families can look different" Mara's mother explains. "Families can have different grown ups!"
"That is very different" says Mara. "That is really cool that you have two dads!" "Thanks!" says the little girl. "I think having two dads is very unique and different!"
After leaving the grocery store, Mara realizes that families can look very different all over.
The next day, Mara arrives at the carnival. She is very excited to eat cotton candy and ride all the carnival rides.
After Mara grabbed some cotton candy, she sees that a little girl has the same doll has her. Mara walks up to the little girl and introduces herself.
"I'm Mara! and this is Penny. What is your name?" Mara asks. "I am Molly, and this is Heather!" Molly says. "Would you like to pretend that our dolls are playing at the Carousel?" Asks Mara. "Yes! I call the horse!" says Molly
Mara and Molly are having a great time on the Carousel playing with their dolls. Mara sees that everybody can look different and have families can look very different all over.
