Subjective label- A dangerous encounter with an unknown animal in the wilderness.
Physiological arousal+cognitive interpretation-Accelerated heart rate, hyperventilation, sweat production, and an immediate surge of adrenaline. Leo evaluates the situation by connecting his physical arousal to his environmental cues. He thinks: My heart is racing because that growl belongs to a dangerous wild animal, and I am completely exposed. Therefore, this situation is a threat to my survival.
Behavioral expression- A frozen posture, widened eyes, and a slow, defensive backward retreat.
Theory of emotion- Schachter-Singer Two-Factor Theory.
Maslow's Impact- As referenced in our psychology textbook and module videos, Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs explains human motivation as a pyramid of requirements that must be met sequentially. This model is vital because it explains why Leo's goals instantly shifted the moment he heard the growl. Before the encounter, Leo was focused on finding a comfortable campsite, a transition toward basic physiological comfort. However, the predator's presence threatened his immediate safety.
