chariot of the sun
The chariot of the sun is one of the most enduring mythological metaphors in human history. Across various ancient civilizations, it served as a poetic explanation for the daily movement of the sun across the sky before modern science proved the earth's rotation.
The golden chariot was pulled by four winged, fiery steeds named Pyrois (the Fiery), Aeos (the Dawn), Aethon (the Burning), and Phlegon (the Blazing).
In a famous cautionary myth, Helios's mortal son, Phaëthon, demanded to drive the sun chariot to prove his divine lineage. Bound by an oath, Helios reluctantly agreed. Phaëthon immediately lost control of the powerful horses, flying too close to the Earth—which scorched landscapes and created the deserts of North Africa—before Zeus was forced to strike him down with a thunderbolt to save the world.
