Sophie's World
Today Sophie is getting ready for school and is excited to show her friend Iris the friendship bracelets she made for their first day of middle school.
As she walks to school, the bully Olivia from elementary walks up to her and..... waves? Sophie is so confused and wonders what changed but continues to walk to school.
When she gets to school, she finds Iris and gives her the bracelet. "Hey Iris, I made friendship bracelets for our first day," she exclaims! "Umm Sophie, we are in MIDDLE SCHOOL now, bracelets are for babies, especially friendship ones," Iris says.
They both head off to class, but Sophie is embarrassed, sad and angry all at once. Iris totally put her down and made her feel like she wasn't ready for middle school.
Olivia sees Sophie from afar and comes to talk to her. "Hey Sophie! Are you ok? What just happened? You look so sad." "Iris completely put me down, she said that my bracelet wasn't cool and that they are for babies. I just wanted us to remember our first day!" sighs Sophie. "Uh rude, who cares about Iris, I think bracelets are in, come on lets go to class." "Okay, I just need to head to my locker first, thanks for cheering me up. See you in a bit?" "You bet!" says Olivia. Olivia is compassionate and comforts Sophie; but little did Sophie know it was all part of Olivia's grand plan.
In class, Iris confronts Sophie. "What where you doing with OLIVIA of all people! She is literally our worst nightmare!" Iris exclaims. "Correction, she's your worst nightmare and my new friend, and since when do you get to decide who I hang out with?" Sophie asks. "I'm not deciding... uhh I just want you to be safe, Olivia is not a nice person and remember that verse from Proverbs.."
"Whatever, she's changed now and you're starting to annoy me," Sophie says. "You know what? Fine, if that's how you're gonna treat your BEST Friend then..." Iris says as she storms off angrily. Iris stops as she sees Olivia walk into the room."Hey Olivia come sit over here," Sophie shouts. "SURE COMING!" Olivia yells back.
When Sophie looks away, Olivia whispers in Iris' ear. "Stay out of my way, or I'll add you to my master plan and I'm sure you wouldn't like that." Iris immediately senses that Olivia is up to something bad and decides to warn Sophie after class.
The teacher finishes class and free time begins. Sophie and Olivia are having a blast and Iris stands in the corner trying to figure out what Olivia's plan is. "Gosh, you're way more fun than Iris, Olivia!" Sophie exclaims. "I KNOW, WE DON'T EVEN NEED HER TO HAVE FUN," Olivia says loud enough for Iris to hear. But Iris isn't even listening, she is busy trying to figure out a way to talk to Sophie even though she's still mad at her.
As Iris watches Olivia and Sophie play around she tries to think of all the things that Olivia could possibly do to hurt Sophie. Sophie is her best friend and she can't give up on her! "I'll talk to her during lunch then," she thinks to herself.
Iris finds Sophie at their old lunch spot and sits down beside her to talk to her. "Hey, I'm sorry about earlier but I think Olivia is trying to sabotage you." Iris says calmly. "Sabotage me, oh no! What should I do?" Sophie asks. "I knew you'd believe me either way I think we should start looking for clues..." "You really thought I was going to believe you?" Sophie cuts her off.
"How naive do you think I am? First is the bracelets, now making a NEW FRIEND? Are you trying to ruin my life?" Sophie exclaims. "So this is what this is about? The bracelets?" Iris asks. "No, it isn't just about the bracelets, it's about every time you've made me feel small!" "If that's how you feel then I'll just leave." Iris says sadly. "Yeah, you can go, it's not like I needed you anyways." Sophie says with her anger boiling. She decides to eat outside instead, and look for Olivia.
Sophie heads outside and sees that there is a crowd around Olivia so she goes to investigate.
"Hey everyone, did you know that Sophie is just a loser who has no friends and thought that I could actually be friends with her? Look at this hilarious picture of her in elementary," Olivia yells for the whole school to hear. "Omg she looks like such a nerd," says a classmate. "I know, she literally has gap teeth," said another. "Oh look! Here she comes! It's Sloppy Sophie" says Olivia. Everyone bursts out laughing.
"SLOPPY SOPHIE, SLOPPY SOPHIE!" they all chanted. "I thought we were friends!" Sophie cried. "Friends? Never in a million years!" Olivia replies. Sophie runs away crying. She has no friends and middle school is officially the worst. Iris sees the situation from afar and runs after Sophie.
Iris doesn't even have to look for Sophie, she already knew that she would be at their old lunch spot. So Iris heads there and finds Sophie looking really sad. "If you came here to say I told you so, do it quickly and save me any further embarrassment," Sophie says. "After all we've been through you really think I'm here to make fun of you?"
"Duh, I mean why else would you even come here? You already think I'm too uncool for school," Sophie sighs. "I don't think you're uncool at all, I was just scared of being treated differently for liking things like bracelets. I didn't want anyone to hear us and make fun of us, but that was wrong of me," Iris replies. "You were right from the start, I should have put my feelings aside and listened to you, I was just so hurt by what you told me that I didn't even realize that I was pushing you away." "It's ok, I'm sorry I hurt your feelings earlier." "And I'm sorry for not listening to you earlier either," Sophie replies.
"Friends?" Sophie asks. "Best friends!" Iris replies.
The two girls begin to head home. Their first day of middle school was a crazy one but in the end it would be remembered forever. "Hey what was that verse you were trying to tell me earlier?" Sophie asks. "Oh the Proverbs one? It is Proverbs 27:6 it said that wounds from a friend could be trusted but niceness from an enemy can't" Iris replies. "Well I guess that really played out today, am I right?"
"Definitely, from now on let's always talk it out when we disagree on something or feel overlooked by one another," Iris requests. "For sure, and, we should totally get back at Olivia," Sophie replies. "No she'll get what's coming for her." "Olivia McAllister please report to the Principal's office, that's Olivia McAllister to the principal's office, thank you." says the school's intercom. "Did you do that?" Sophie asks. "We'll never know," Iris says slyly. The girls burst out laughing and head home.
While Sophie and Iris have fun, Olivia's gotta run!
Moral of the story: Trust your friends and be careful around mean people. Stay alert, your friend only wants the best for you, but others aren't so nice.
