The trauma at dawn

The horizon was barely a bruised violet when the tremor started. In the small, coastal town of Oakhaven, the first light of dawn was usually met with the quiet hum of fishing boats and the gentle crashing of waves. But today, the earth itself seemed to groan, a deep, resonant rumble that shook the glass panes of every storefront along the harbor. Elena stood by her window, a mug of coffee untouched in her hands. She watched the sea. For weeks, the local oceanographers had warned of unusual seismic shifts deep within the continental shelf, but their warnings had been brushed aside by town officials eager to protect the peak summer tourism season

Suddenly, the rumbling stopped. The silence that followed was heavy and absolute. Then, the water began to retreat. Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She didn't need a scientist to tell her what that meant. The ocean was pulling back, exposing wet sand, gasping fish, and jagged reefs that hadn't seen the sun in centuries. The trauma at dawn wasn't just the earthquake—it was what the earthquake had unleashed.

"Run!" she screamed into the empty street, her voice swallowed by the vast, sudden vacuum of the coast. She dropped her mug. It shattered on the hardwood floor, a tiny preview of the destruction to come. Turning on her heel, she bolted out the front door, shouting for her neighbors to wake up. Behind her, miles out in the gray morning light, a towering wall of white foam began to form on the horizon, racing toward the sleeping town with a terrifying, muffled roar.
