harp seals

Harp seals are earless marine mammals living in the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans. Adults grow 5 to 6 feet long and weigh 260 to 300 pounds, marked by a dark harp- or saddle-shaped pattern on their back. They migrate thousands of miles each year to breed on sea ice.

Size: Adults reach about 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters) in length and weigh roughly 260 to 300 pounds (120 to 135 kilograms). Markings: They sport a light gray or yellowish body with a dark black face mask and a curved, harp-like back marking. Pups: Newborns are born with fluffy, pure-white coats called "lanugo" to absorb sunlight and stay warm.
