Traveling Dream

Emma had a long day in second grade learning about the earths natural events. So much so that when she climbed into bed and shut her eyes, she started dreaming about all the places she could travel to.

Her first stop was the famous Mountain St. Helens. "Run!" People were yelling at her to run as far and fast as she could or she would get swallowed by lava. Confused and terrified, Emma looked up at the smoky sky and ran like her life depended on it.

As Emma started running, the earth started transitioning from mountains to a beach. The more the beach came into view, the slower her speed got. Emma stopped by the waves to catch her breath. While looking down, she noticed that every time the waves came up to shore, it took pieces of rocks and sand with it.

Deciding to keep going on her adventure, she kept walking. As she was walking down a street, the floor started to shake. It was slow at first, but then became so violent that the tall buildings were swaying. She could hear car windows cracking. After a few seconds the floor stopped shaking, but the road was now crumpled.

Ready to move on, she traveled to Utah. Her destination was the Arches National Park. The wind had slowly worn away parts of the rock. The wind had created holes in the rocks, that now formed the arches. She was able to walk under them!

Staying on track with the warm weather, she traveled to the Grand Canyon. "How are the cracks so deep?" Emma had asked to no one in particular. "Long ago the canyon was filled with strong water that formed the deep cracks. Looking at the different colors of the canyon show how long it took to be formed." A tour guide had replied. When Emma reluctantly glanced down, there was still water at the bottom!

When she looked over the canyon, the sun started to set. Understanding this meant she had to wake up from her adventurous dream, she realized how unique the earth is. Changes in earth can happen as quick as a second or as slow as millions of years. She made an agreement in her head to live on the calm beach instead of the raging volcanoes in the future.
